Summerlin Pumpkin Festival and Family, Fun and Fur Festival on the same day
This is the second annual Family, Fun, and Fur Festival and will be held at Summerlin Centre Community Park ( I did a blog post on this park it is beautiful) This will be held this Saturday 11th 2008. Runs from 10 am - 4pm. Summerlin Centre Park is on Town Centre Drive, just past Charleston. Pet’s on leashes are welcomed.
This Festival is focused on humane education and fun for the entire family.
Educational and service booths will include a $5 micro chipping clinic, pet tag creation
Information on the importance of pets as part of the family, the value of spay/neuter, and many other topics.
In addition, please join us to make food bowls for your pets, experience hands-on proper dog training techniques, IPTouch pet massage, help the Nevada SPCA name future pet residents, and earn an Animal Hero Badge.
You can also enter your pet’s photo in the “Cutest” Pet Photo Contest and enter a drawing in the Be Kind to Animals drawing contest.
Summerlin Pumpkin Festival will take place at The Gardens Park also on Sat. Oct 11th from 12pm-4pm. You can purchase your pumpkin from The Pumpkin Patch. Summerlin residents can also purchase wrist bands to participate in a hay maze, petting zoo, bounce house, costume parade, and scarecrow building contest. Wristbands will be sold for 7 dollars. The Las Vegas Farmers Market will also be there and have all sorts of goodies.

The event will take place October 18 and 19 so we have time to plan a strategy. The event runs from 10am-6pm both days.
10th Annual Art Walk
This festival is the Las Vegas Valley’s long and largest, Art Walk features regional artists such as Painter Michael Nisperos and metal artisan Rick Vigallon. Mark Vranesh who is the producer of Art Walk is a long time Las Vegan. This event is being held at Village Center Circle. Saturday Oct. 25th and Sun. Oct 26th each day from 10am-5pm both days.
70 artists are expected to fill out the roster of jewelers, metal craftspeople, glass artists, sculptors, fabric crafters, mixed media artisans and painters.
In celebration of National Native American Heritage Month, native arts will be demonstrated by local craftspeople; live music will be featured at the Entertainment Plaza and by exhibiting artists.
Kids can enjoy seasonal crafts and projects at the Kids’ Art Park located in the S.W. corner of the Center.
All events, activities, demonstrations and on site parking are free and open to the public.
Trails Village Center is located in the heart of Summerlin near Summerlin Parkway and Town Center Drive. The Center provides a comfortable setting for enjoying the art, shopping at the more than 30 specialty retailers and dining at several casual eateries.
Mad Hatter Tea Party
Thursday Nov. 20th 4:40pm-6pm at the Gardens Community Center.
Participants will get to do face painting, storytelling, and of course tea with Alice, The Queen of Hearts, and the Mad Hatter. This event is $15.00 ( make checks to The Summerlin Council.) Registration begins Nov. 3rd at the community centers. (Trails, Willows, Gardens) There will be limited seating.
Hometown Holidays
One word Santa and reindeer all coming to the Gardens community center on Dec. 3rd and Dec 4th from 6pm to 8:30pm. This annual event is very popular and has cookie decorating, holiday music and Yes Santa!

These ducks are so cute. Every morning they come over to the wall and ask me where their
breakfast is. I love living in Summerlin and having the wildlife in my back yard.
I have always felt very safe living in Sun City Summerlin because we have a security patrol that is next to none. They are all volunteers. They care about our community and are very vigilant and work very hard for the people who live in the neighborhood.
There are 230 volunteers and they keep our community safe 365 days 24/7. How is that for dedication?
Mayor Oscar Goodman and Councilman Larry Brown presented this incredible group of men and women with Citizens of the Month Award. 40 members were on hand to receive this honor.
Each shift usually includes a dispatcher and four patrol cars. There are some ex military and also ex police but many of these folks are just everyday people who care enough.

This is a very nice view of J.W. Marriott Resort and Spa. There is also a beautiful casino called The Rampart which connects with the Resort and Spa. The J.W. Marriott also backs up to the TPC Golf Course. Before Red Rock Casino opened this was the only Casino Spa Resort that was officially in Summerlin. Most people think that Sun Coast is part of Summerlin but the boundaries end just south of the J.W. Marriott. Thanks to LasVegasUndressed for this beautiful shot.
If you are driving along the 215 beltway very close to Red Rock Casino you will see the shell of building that has been going on. It now looks like a ghost town with the structures silhouette plainly not being attended to. General Growth Properties of Chicago and The Howard Hughes Corporation announced plans to delay the opening of this long anticipated mall until sometime in 2010. The Shops at Summerlin Centre was to open in October of 2009 and already had 100 retailers on board. Some of these retailers included Macy’s, Crate and Barrel, Dillard’s, and Nordstrom’s. Summerlin residents have been hearing about this mall for a long time.
The developer has promised that the project will go forward but the general economic climate at this time. John Bucksbaum Chief Executive with General Growth Properties was quoted saying they have the full support of the retailers to delay the project.
The Shops at Summerlin Centre will be beautiful when it is opened with pedestrian friendly shopping and outdoor gardens with seating for visitors to relax and enjoy their shopping experience. There will also be condominiums built.
I was very much looking forward to the opening next year, but hope that the plans to open in 2010 will come to fruition. I will post updates to this project as I find out more.

In the Jewish culture a bar mitzvah or “coming of age” of a boy or girl is around the age 13. But Temple Bet Knesset Bamidbar, a synagogue that holds services in Sun City Summerlin a community for 55 and over are planning to add a new perspective to this ancient tradition.
On November 1st 2008 at 10am 19 members of the congregation who are 83 years young and older will celebrate their longevity with a second bar mitzvah.
The celebration will take place at Desert Vista Community Center 10360 Sun City Blvd.
In the Jewish tradition if someone reaches the age 70 it is a start of a symbolic new life. Rabbi Hershel Brooks is trying to convey there is much left that can be done with their lives. Getting involved with family and community. He wants them to think ahead and not think they are too old to try new things and to just try it. Have hope for tomorrow.During the celebration the 19 members will recite many of the same prayers and blessing as they did as a teenager. The celebration is expected to bring many family and friends and be a well attended event in the lives of these remarkable seniors.
Summerlin has 22 community parks plus hundreds of neighborhood parks. Along Town Centre Drive is a big community park. Right in the heart of Summerlin. Summerlin Centre Community Park 20.4 acres line with large palm trees. It features two full size size lighted soccer fields, a practice soccer field, a picnic area, walking trails, a child’s play area and public restrooms. It is a beautiful park. Behind the park is a gated community named Parkside and the streets are Liberty Park and Park Centre.
