Should The Desert Sportsman's Rifle & Pistol Club have their license renewd?

The Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club located on Charleston just on your way towards the visitor center at Red Rock Canyon has a license that comes up for renewal every ten years. ( CLUB WEBSITE ) It has always been a good place to go shooting and almost anything goes, machine guns, automatic weapons and your regular guns and rifles. They have gun safety courses and are members of the NRA.

However as Summerlin grows should this range really be located where it is? The villages that are most affected are The Paseos, The Ridges, Red Rock Country Club, and the new village which will be built west of The Paseos.

I had the honor today to attend The First Summerlin Blogger’s Breakfast. Tom Warden, (Senior Vice President of Community and Government Relations of the Howard Hughes Corporation ) came to speak to us about the latest going on in Summerlin. He just found out today about the hearing this evening on the renewal for the club and he will be there to oppose the license being renewed.

This first meeting is just the committee and will most likely go to the full commission in about a month. There is NO Notification to neighborhoods around the shooting range so it will be up to the blogger’s and Home News to advise people of this.

This blog will have an update with the date and time we will be able as Summerlin Residents go down and give our opinion on the renewal of this license. I have always believed in the right to bare arms but is this Rifle and Pistol Club now too close to where our families live? I would like some comments on this.

After the meeting I drove up and snapped a couple of pictures.

Congratulations to Summerlin Resident Georgina Vaughn for winning Miss Nevada. We will be supporting you big time in April for Miss USA.

Real Summerlin would like to congratulate Georgina Vaughan for winning the title of Miss Nevada. I am sure all of Summerlin will be supporting her as she competes for Miss USA this April. The pageant will be held at Planet Hollywood and of course is a joint venture between The Donald (Trump) and NBC Universal. Nevada has never won a Miss USA pageant and with our hometown Summerlin young women competing ( not only that she was born and raised in Las Vegas, a true Las Vegas native) I am sure all of Summerlin will be behind her, and cheering her on. It would be wonderful for her to bring the first Miss USA title to Nevada.

Why is the exit at 215 and Lake Meade not open yet?

A reader left me a comment asking why the exit still as not open. I have wondered the same thing, driving up there every few days to see if it were open yet. I told my reader that I would call on Monday and see what I could find out.

When I opened the paper this morning and there was an editorial answering this question. It seems that Public Works had to reach an agreement with Nevada Power and that just happened this week. They are now saying it could be after Thanksgiving before the exit is open. The editorial can be read here.

Looks as if the interchange at Lake Mead and the 215 is going to be opened and not stay closed until 2010.

The county commissioners yesterday voted amidst very little protest to open the 215-Lake Mead Blvd. interchange instead of leaving it closed until 2010. It could be opened in as little as 5-6 weeks. When the story came out Summerlin residence were outraged as was the author of this blog.
The commission decided to have this meeting and reverse the decision after phone calls, email and mail made it impossible to ignore the outrage.
According to an editorial on the Review Journal a few not in my backyard people showed up saying that the blood of Sun City Summerlin residents was going to flow down Lake Mead because there will be deadly crashes.
The commissioners were very pleased with their selves “County commissioners lauded the openness of the process and how public involvement ensured government acted in the interests of all taxpayers. Indeed, it was the feedback of a frequently underestimated public that brought about this action. But it’s still unsettling to know that so many county officials previously thought it was a good idea to leave a badly needed, $12.4 million bridge closed for two years.”

Congratulations to those of us that wanted this interchange open. Looks like we made it:)

The bridge is done and the exits and entrances are almost finished but access is being denied till 2010 all because of a handful of residents. It is not right!

Lake Mead Blvd.

I just got back from a trip where I took my mom to Utah for a few days. Salt Lake City to be exact. It is just as hot there as it is here I will tell you that. Of course they have a lot more green there than we do here, but that is another thought for another day.

I brought the 215 off of 1-15 around to Summerlin Parkway. I had not been on this part of the belt in awhile. I was so excited to see the new bridge almost done on Lake Mead Blvd. The exit’s still had closed signs but it looked like real progress was being made and it would not be long before the exit and entrance would be good to go.

Wow, was I ever wrong. It seems the people of Sun City Summerlin (I live in there) who are at the top of Lake Mead have made a deal with the council. The access will not be able to be used until 2010. What? Are you kidding me?

This access would save the people who wish to go to Cheyenne copious amounts of time and gas. It would also give easier access to 215 Southbound as soon as the underpasses at Summerlin Parkway and Far Hills are finished.

I wonder if other people living in Sun City Summerlin know of this. Or are a handful of people living at the top of Lake Mead stopping the rest of the residents from having easier access to the 215 both north and south bound?

If you know anyone living in Sun City Summerlin let them know what is going on. Ask them to call their council members and raise some objections. This could also be considered a safety issue, that exit would make it easier for the paramedics from Summerlin Hospital to get into Sun City.

Let me know what you think on this issue.

Due to a slowing economy the city of Las Vegas has made the decision to shut down The Pavilion Center pool and the Veterans Memorial Leisure Center on Sunday. The city has determined that attendance at the centers are lowest on that day. 8 other centers around Las Vegas will also be shut down on Sundays. The city is hoping to save $139,000 a year in operating expenses. I am wondering if during this hot weather if more people will miss the opportunity to swim. Let me know your thoughts.
